If you’re planning a cruise out of South Florida, whether it’s from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, one of the first questions that usually comes up is, “Where should I fly into?”

And honestly, it’s a fair question. With two major cruise ports and two international airports nearby, the options can feel a little overwhelming at first.

Here’s the great news: when you’re cruising from this region, you have flexibility. You can sail from PortMiami and fly into Fort Lauderdale, or cruise out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and land at Miami International. Either combination can work. It just depends on what fits best with your schedule and flight availability.

That said, if we had to pick a favorite, we’d go with Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) just about every time. Compared to Miami, it’s smaller, easier to navigate, and usually much less hectic. Security lines move faster, baggage claim is a breeze, and the whole process tends to be more relaxed. It’s a smoother start to your vacation.

Even if your cruise leaves from Miami, flying into FLL is still a great option. Getting between the two cities is easy, and one of our favorite travel tips is the Tri-Rail. This local commuter train runs north and south between FLL and MIA, and it only costs a few dollars to ride. It’s a low-stress, budget-friendly way to get from airport to airport or close to the cruise terminals without paying for expensive transfers.

Now, no matter which airport you fly into, there’s one thing we always recommend. Fly in the day before your cruise. Delays, weather, and travel hiccups are all too common, and cruise ships wait for no one. Arriving early gives you a buffer and lets you start your vacation on a more relaxed note. You can unwind at your hotel, grab a bite to eat along the beach, or just soak in that pre-cruise excitement.
